GTG Diamonds was created by Sheila Guritz.
Sheila has created a wonderful career
for herself in the jewelry industry. In the 80's Sheila
got her feet wet in the jewelry business by working as
a sales person on the floor of a large chain store operation.
However, not feeling part of the jewelry chain store culture
with its lack of training, faux sales and high pressure
techniques. She decided to move to other things and in
the early 90's she found her home to be at Nordstrom.
At Nordstrom she excelled at every task they threw her
way and was eventually promoted to management in the men's
division. Her proactive work ethic combined with her customer
service and management skills became so well known that
headhunters came running in her direction. Although she
always turned them down they continued to call her up
until the time she left Nordstrom. Sheila knew she found
her home at Nordstrom and dug in.
In late '95 a friend phoned her from
the past, a friend whom she had known from her earliest
years in High School. This friend and best friend had
lost touch for a while. He had spent his entire adult
life in the jewelry industry and was now Vice President
of a major diamond firm in Northern California. While
they reconnected over the next few weeks, he was hearing
from friends that Sheila was a rising star at Nordstrom.
Having been an ex-Nordstrom Fine Jewelry manager himself.
He realized his business could greatly use Sheila. So
within several weeks Sheila started receiving offers of
employment from him. Within a couple of months he convinced
her to work for him. And she gave up everything at Nordstrom
on a gamble.
It had been years since she had worked
with jewelry and she wasn't sure it was the right move
to make. However she found that the close knit family
atmosphere that her friend inspired to create at this
new opportunity, as opposed to the large corporate atmosphere
at Nordstrom, was exactly what Sheila needed. Sheila was
able to use her existing talents while given considerable
freedom for growth. This combined with a more flexible
time schedule lent well to her home life. Sheila had been
supporting her mother and two sisters for the past several
years. Her mother had become unable to work because of
serious back injury and needed help out at home. All the
while her best friend recognized that Sheila had a latent
ability for art. She was not only superb at helping customers
buy diamonds, but also at helping them create their own
designs. Sheila’s friend made the decision to offer to
pay for classes at the Revere Academy of Art in San Francisco.
Sheila had to make a hard decision. Could
she shoulder all the responsibilities of home and work
combined with school? The short-term answer was no but
she thought hard about the future. Within a week came
the answer and it was yes! Sheila started making trips
up to the Revere Academy of Art. While there she immediately
started learning how to draft jewelry designs and finally
how to carve waxes for lost wax casting.
After schooling she began designing for
the store on a regular basis. She would first draft a
design on paper, sketching it out with the customer in
mind. Then after she reviewed the design with the client
she would start work on carving the wax. This was probably
the hardest part of the process and with time she became
very skilled at working out designs in quick order. The
clients would come in and see a 3-D model of the design
she had created in wax. This model would be used in the
casting process which the goldsmith would undertake. In
short time she became the stores in house designer. Though
she never competed in any of the well known design contests,
her designs are worn by consumers in countries as far
away as Australia. It was about this time that her friend
had let her know that he had also fallen in love with
Sheila. Sheila was quite surprised at this because she
had also secretly fallen in love with him. Within a year
the two were married. Then after several successful years
of designing, Sheila and her husband decided they would
like a change. So they both went to work for another diamond
cutting firm and Sheila decided to undertake a new skill.
She had been to this facility in the last year and found
she had a desire to learn how to cut diamonds.
Upon arrival she immediately started
training as a diamond cutter, and ended up learning this
cutting process faster than anyone who had not known how
to cut before. She learned so well in fact that she actually
became a trainer at this firm. It was later discussed
that it was probably a benefit that she had design and
wax carving experience and no previous cutting experience
at all. After four years of cutting and training Sheila
and her husband thought it was time to start a family
and on January 31st of 2003 she gave birth to their first
son Gareth. Sheila decided it would be better for her
to work in a way that allowed her to be with Gareth all
the time. So she operates this company using her sons
initials GTG as the company's name.
Sheila’s newest joy is learning motherhood!
Sheila proudly tells people “It’s the most
rewarding thing in the world!” and “I
wouldn’t have it any other way." She
believes very much in the need for one parent to be at
home with a child. So much In fact she will do nothing
that takes her away from her son! In February of 2003
she started a web journal
concerning Gareth and it links into this site.
Most of Sheila’s clients come from referrals.
She is always grateful for the opportunity to be able
to help someone.
